Oscar Sweepstakes
Roll up, roll up, place your bets; though when it comes to the Oscars I wonder why people even bother. In the predictability stakes the Academy Awards are now pushing the Scottish Premier League for the world’s most pointless competition.

There were over 1,000 movies released in 2012, but unless you were involved in making Life of Pi, Les Miserables, Lincoln, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, The Master or Amour you’ve got no chance of going home with a Statuette in February. Its not that the ten films the Academy chose to focus on are bad. The opposite is true; they are some of the years best. But their choices, as in most years, are so obvious.

In true Academy style most cinema genres have been ignored. Horror, comedy, fantasy, science fiction, thriller and numerous other types have missed out. The Best Picture category is the usual mix of drama and historical biopic with the occasional sprinkling of musical. To be fair, 2012 wasn’t exactly a golden year for genre cinema. Classics in the comedy and scary movie genres were particularly thin on the ground. But even so, you wonder why the Academy continues to give genre film short shrift. Still, it’s nothing new so fans and filmmakers struggle on regardless. One of the few joys left with the Oscars is predicting Academy predictability. So here we have FilmsFilmsFilms pick from the full list of nominations, who we’d like to see win and who is likely to win on 24th February. Feel free to pick your own winners and post them below for fun. The most accurate predictions win two tickets to the 1986 Scottish Cup Final.
