When it comes to films and cinema some things you just can’t change. Popcorn will always be overpriced, the trailers will never be unsuitable for the feature presentation, and the Academy will only nominate from the smallest group of films they can get away with.
Last years selection was typically slender, but this years list is positively anorexic. Unless you had a hand in 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, Gravity, Dallas Buyers Club or The Wolf Of Wall Street I wouldn’t bother turning up at the Kodak Theatre next month.
The Academy has steered clear of anything remotely commercial, but then 2013 wasn’t a particular stellar year for the popcorn movie. However, Peter Jackson’s Hobbit
trilogy has been completely overlooked again; the token statuette the Academy was forced to give PJ for Return of the King
